NEW ATHLETE INSTRUCTIONS

You are a "new athlete" if you:

  • Have never played a sport at Lakewood High School.
  • Are a new transfer, foreign exchange, or homeschool student.
  • Attend another Jeffco high school that does not offer a certain sport, and you did not play on an LHS team last season/year.

  1. Get a Sports Physical. You will need a sports physical to complete the online registration! Physicals are current for 12 months from the date of the last exam
    1. If you don't have a current sports physical, make an appointment with your doctor ASAP. Click here for a form that you can bring to your physician. We also accept any letter or form signed by your doctor.
      1. The Little Clinics at select King Soopers and Walgreens offer drop-in sports physicals.
      2. Also, HealthOne is offering $20 sports physicals at several locations. Click here for a flyer with more information.
    2. Scan or take a picture of the physical and have it ready to upload during Step 4 of the online registration.
  2. Athletes need a Jeffco Student ID. Students who attend a Jeffco school already have an ID number.
    1. If your student attended pre-school, kindergarten, or any grade at a Jeffco school years ago, they already have a Jeffco Student ID. Please contact Mrs. DeVito and she can find it. Call 303-982-7114. Do not create another Jeffco account!
    2. If your student never attended a Jeffco school, you will need to obtain their student ID by creating an account using JeffcoConnect. For your school, select Jeffco Central Services and DO NOT SELECT LAKEWOOD HIGH. Click here for that program.
  3. Register Online.
    1. Click on the Football Icon at the bottom of this page. Create a Family account, then look an email containing a link to complete the registration. If you don't see the email from Lakewood High Online Registration, look in your junk mail.
    2. Click on the link. It will bring you to the seven-part registration form. In Section 4, you will upload your sports physical.
      • If the site won't accept your physical, send an email to Mrs. DeVito and attach the file.
      • If the system won't let you move forward without uploading a physical, just upload a piece of paper with a note to Mrs. DeVito to look for your email.
    3. Move from section to section  by selecting "Next Page." To finish, be sure you get to the screen where you "Submit" the registration. If you don't "Submit," you won't be registered.
    4. Dual Sports: If you intend to play two sports at the same time (i.e. Soccer and Track), you will need to register twice, and submit a completed Dual Sport form to Mrs. DeVito, found in the forms section above.
  4. Create a student account in PlanetHS.  PlanetHS is used by CHSAA to collect eligibility information. All Colorado athletes must have an account. This is a one-time sign-up. Only the student needs an account. Parents don’t need an account unless their student is a transfer athlete.
    1. To create an account, have the student send a TEXT to 69274 containing the code S41573 in the message, OR click here to go to Planet HS and use the code for Lakewood (S41573) when signing up.
    2. Click on the link, answer a few questions and then you are done. It takes less than five minutes. It will look like you need to do something else, but you don’t.
  5. Transfer, Non-Attending & Foreign Exchange Athletes:
    1. Transfer Athletes: You are a trasnfer athlete if you attended a different high school prior to attending Lakewood. All transfers must complete CHSAA's online Transfer form to determine eligibility, even if you did not play a sport at your previous school. It is likely a transfer student will not be able to play at the varsity level for 12 months. Contact LHS Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Mike Hughes at 303-982-7094 or via email by clicking here to discuss your specific situation. Once you meet with him, follow these instructions to complete the online form:
      1. The Student creates a PlanetHS account (see Step 4 above.)
      2. Next, the Parent needs to create a PlanetHS account, and link to their student. Please do it in this order, otherwise the forms will not work.
      3. Select Transfer Form. Be sure to include the name and email address of the Athletic Director at your previous high school. If this is not done, the form will sit in limbo and not be approvedan
    2. Non-Attending Athletes: If you don't attend LHS, submit "Form 7-Student Athlete Information" (found in the Form section above). Email it to Mrs. DeVito. Also, go into your PlanetHS account and update your profile to add Lakewood High School in the "Additional School Participation" section, and add the sport you will be playing.
    3. Foreign Exchange Students: Please contact Athletic Director Mike Huges to set up a short meeting to complete required paperwork. Call at 303-982-7094 or via email by clicking here
  6. CHSAA Eligibility: As part of the registration process, we look at your enrollment status, age, the number of classes you are taking, and past and present grades. If you had two or more final "F" grades in the Fall 2019 semester, it will affect your chances of making a team. Also, if you received an "F" grade in any high school class, make sure to contact your counselor and arrange re-taking the class so it doesn't interfere with sports eligibility or graduating.
Academic Eligibility During the Season: We will be looking at your grades each week. If you have two or more “F” grades you may practice, but not participate in any games/meets/matches until the following week, or when you don’t have two failing grades.
  7. Look for Your Approval Email: An email will be sent within 72 hours of registering (Mondays-Fridays), approving the athlete to practice/tryout or alerting you of any issues. If it has been three business days and you haven't received the email, click here to send Mrs. DeVito a note.
  8. Pay Your Fees by the Deadline:  A few days after receiving the email, go to the fee section in JeffcoConnect to pay online, or bring a check, cash or credit card to Ms. McElroy, our financial secretary. All athletes need to pay the $175 Jeffco Athletic Fee each time they play a sport, as well as any team fees. Please pay by the deadline below, or make arrangements with Ms. McElroy
    1. Fee Deadline for Non-Cut Sports is Friday, March 6, 2020 (Boys Lacrosse, Boys Swim & Dive, Boys/Girls Track, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis)
    2. Fee Deadline for Tryout/Cut Sports is Friday, March 13, 2020 (Baseball and Girls Soccer)
    3. Free & Reduced Lunch Students: Be sure to re-apply to this program each year and select the option to "share your information." Click here for a link to apply. Students on the Free and Reduced Lunch program do not need to pay the $175 fee, however, they must still pay any team fees.

    2. You will need to establish a new registration for spring. To do this, select the "Register" tab on the left, then "Athletic Registration." Look on the left side and "register" your student from the drop-down menu.  This should bring you to the seven-part registration page.
    3. You should see your information from last year. Update phone numbers, medical and emergency information, select your sport for this season, and electronically sign the permission forms.
    4. Go all the way to the end by continuing to select "Next Page," and be sure you get to the screen where you "Submit" your new registration. If you don't "Submit" you won't be registered. Non-Attending Athletes: If you played on an LHS sport team last year, and don't attend LHS, submit "Form 7-Student Athlete Information" (found in the Form section above). Also, go into your PlanetHS account and update your profile to add Lakewood High School in the "Additional School Participation" section, and add the sport you will be playing.
  5. PlanetHS Account:
    1. If you previously played a sport, you have an account.

  6. Read Steps 6, 7 and 8 in the New Athlete section regarding CHSAA elibility, receiving the approval email and paying fees.

FAQs

  • My high school doesn't offer my sport? Can I play at Lakewood? If your school doesn's offer certain sports, or you are homeschooled, in most circumstances you can join a Lakewood team. Send an email to Mrs. DeVito rearding your specific situation, and then follow the instructions under the New Athlete section.
  • We just moved into the Lakewood area and my student will begin his sophomore year at Lakewood. What do I need to do? Contact Athletic Director Mike Hughes to set up a short meeting to discus your situation, and then you will need to complete CHSAA's online Transfer form. Call him at 303-982-7094 or via email by clicking here.  It is likely your student will not be eligible to play a varsity sport at Lakewood for 12 months. See Step 5 in the New Athlete section.
  • Can Foreign Exchange Students participate in sports? YesYou will need to contact Athletic Director Mike Huges to set up a short meeting to complete required paperwork. You can call him at 303-982-7094 or via email by clicking here.
  • My student is on the Free & Reduced Lunch Program. How does that work with sport fees? For one, each year families need to re-apply to the Free & Reduced Lunch Program. One thing to note is that when you complete the form, in the section that asks if your information can be shared, select "yes." This will allow Lakewood's financial secretary to waive the $175 Jeffco Athletic fee. However, families will still be responsible for paying any team fees. Click here to apply to the program.
